Several Months ago I wrote an article praising the results I had from using Bullet Proof Coffee. The Concept of bullet proof coffee was developed by Dave Thackery who is known for the Bullet Proof Executive Blog. Now, the link above for Bullet Proof Coffee takes you through HIS version of the coffee. I use and older version, and it still works. Here are my notable exceptions. Where Thackery recommends MCT Oil, I’ve used Coconut Oil as it was cheaper and more readily available. The MCT oil is stronger supposedly, but I have no real data to support that claim.
Why am I back? More importantly, why did I leave? To be honest, I hated the taste of the coffee I was using. That was my fault. I was just making bad coffee or the coffee was too strong. I recently changed my brew style after reading the Four Hour Body’s take on brewing. The result was a much better tasting cup of coffee that didn’t force me to run to the sink and spit it out. This new style using the Aero Press will be discussed in an upcoming blog. So, don’t worry about that. Rest assured I’m making a much more tolerable cup of coffee. I should really say, I’m making a beautiful cup of coffee that requires NO cream or sweetener for ME to consume it.
I use Organic Un-Salted Butter always, sometimes I omit the Coconut Oil depending on how fast I’m getting out the door. But what is the result? As with my early experiments with BP Coffee I feel a HUGE sustainable surge of energy that drives me throughout the first half of the day. Also, I’m feeling more ‘positive’ as a whole as I walk in the door. This is important as this energy last through to the lunch break. I usually lose this energy boost around 10:30pm, a mere few hours after I arrive at the office. Now, the coffee lasts me with sustained energy up to twice as long. Also, I’m using FAR LESS coffee. I drink around 8 oz in this recipe as opposed to the 12 to 16 oz I was consuming previously. That is important to consider, when you’re analyzing cost for upgrading the quality of your ingredients.
Here’s MY Long Form Method:
- Freshly Grind 16 oz of Peet’s Major Dickinson Coffee
- Brew Coffee (Per the Specs Described in Four Hour Chef)
- Blend 2 TBS’s of Butter (and 1 – 2 TBS of Coconut Oil)
Here’s MY Short Form Method:
- Follow the above Steps 1 and 2
- Just drop in the butter, stir vigorously
The Above yields better results, but the later yields solid results and might be a nice way to TRY this method before you go crazy buying a bunch of ingredients and equipment. The reality is, if you don’t use good ingredients this won’t work. So, don’t grab the Sanka and a tub of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, because that will be gross. Take the first step towards doing this well by investing in good coffee. Good Butter, will land you about $8 – $9 four a pound, the Good Coffee can be anywhere from $16 – $30 dollars. Just make sure its organic.
